You can insulate the windows by putting a magnetic acrylic insulating window like a storm window inside the house. The magnetic seal is like a fridge door seal. It absolutely stops all drafts. Acrylic is a much better insulator than glass. The temperature of the surface of the acrylic will be nearly the same temperature as the wall when the outside temperature is -20 degrees Celsius. You don't have to put a sweater on or wrap yourself in a blanket when you sit by a window.
Unlike Plexiglas, Acrylic FF will not yellow or craze. Acrylic is guaranteed not to lose more than 3% of its clarity in ten years and it is 3% clearer than glass to start with. This is a good way to test how good an insulator acrylic is. Put a 2X2 inch piece each of acrylic and glass in the refrigerator for about an hour. Take them out, one in each hand and feel which one is colder. The glass will feel colder because it is a good conductor and it is conducting the heat out of your hand faster than the acrylic. They actually are the same temperature.
Acrylic cuts out about 80% of the U V rays from light, thus slowing down fading of your furniture and furnishings.
The insulating factor (R value) of two pieces of glass with air in between is R 2. Your 4 inch thick walls have an R value of 12. You 6 inch walls have an R value of 20. We put R 40 in our attics. If you were to take the square footage of all the windows in your house and put them on one wall, you would have a wall nearly the length of your house and 8 feet high of R 2 insulation. And you wonder why your heating bills are so high. By adding magnetic acrylic insulating windows to your existing windows you raise the R value of your windows to R 5. If you replace your existing windows with new dual pane, low-E, argon filled windows, you will have an R 4 window. Insulating your existing windows with magnetic acrylic insulating windows will lower your heat bills by as much as 50% depending on how drafty your windows were to begin with.
Condensation forms on the windows because the temperature of the inside glass surface is lower then the dew-point of the humidity in the room. To prevent static build-up and to feel comfortable in your house, the humidity should be between 35 to 45%. By keeping the inside surface temperature of the window about the same as the inside temperature of your walls, you reduce the formation of condensation on the windows by 90% or more.
In conclusion, by insulating your windows, you have a warmer, more comfortable, draft free and energy efficient home. The cost of insulating your windows is an investment because the savings on heating costs will pay for the insulating windows in a few short years and then they will be making you money. Remember, you have to earn $1.40 or more to save $1.00 of after tax money.
